Want to explore the potential of this innovation?
Some resins produced by Benasedo for different coating sectors were selected for modification by introducing organic fractions derived from wind turbine solvolysis.
Due to the compatibility issues, the selection was limited to three families of resins: Short Oil Alkyd, Aromatic Urethane-Oil, and Hydroxylated Polyesters.
For the short oil Alkyd, the maximum amount of solvolysis fraction used was 17%. Best results for anticorrosive tests were obtained for 5 and 10% resin modification.
For coil coating primer application, 5, 10, and 20% of solvolysis fraction were added. The resin containing 5% of solvolysis fraction showed better performance in salt spray test than the reference unmodified resin.
Aromatic Urethane-oil for wood application was modified with 3 and 6% of solvolysis fraction.
Paints from modified and unmodified resins were developed and applied to a wood panel. Glossy, transparency and aesthetic features are like the unmodified resin.
- Introduction of modify epoxy oligomers and glycol in hydroxylated polyesters modifications.
- Introduction of aromatic oligomers in Biobased Resins where aromatic components are not available as biobased.
- Introduction of aromatic oligomers in oil urethane resin with reduction of isocyanate component.
Challenges
- Increase the amount of solvolysis fraction in the resins and widen the possibility of modifications.
- Color reduction of resins modified.
Solution
- Making the solvolysis fraction more concentrated and lowering the molecular weight of oligomers.
- Polymerization at lower temperature.
