This demonstrator developed in RECREATE project is a tangible example of a sustainable approach leveraging reused/reshaped CFRPs in A/C seating systems improving their in-service lifetime.

Currently it happens very often that a minimum number of aircraft seats are replaced for minor local damages on backrest but, with such approach, will be possible to reinforce locally the damaged area of the seat backrest by applying small patch of CFRPs obtained by laser dismantling technique of EoL structural panels, avoiding to replace the seats and improving operational costs for airlines.

  • Novel design methods by implementing reusable reinforcement paths for lightweight composite backrest in aircraft seating.
  • Reversible adhesive principles utilizing heat trigger to separate components.
  • Set of methods to reuse CF layers from EoL composite interiors panels to achieve design for circularity.
  • Laser-shock dismantling technique or high voltage fragmentation for composite layers separation and sorting for circular reuse.
  • Establishing in-service repairing of damaged aircraft seats during air travels.
Challenges
  • Reuse and remanufacturing are not possible on current seat backrest design.
  • Due to thermosetting resin the dismantling and recycling is not possible without compromising the mechanical behavior.
Solution
  • Lightweight reinforcement patch from reused composite waste.
  • Concept of remanufacturing utilizing detachable adhesives.
