Recycling of hybrid carbon or glass fiber-reinforcements for composite products

This demonstrator project is a tangible example of how to recycle composite scraps based on both CF and GF reinforcements to be reprocessed for the manufacturing of semi-structural panels such as cabin linings.

Current design is based on sandwich architectures with a honeycomb Nomex-based structure which is not recyclable nor environment friendly.

The proposed approach in the project is to replace completely the Nomex structure by infill a hybrid mixture of CFs/GFs in the form of chips as core substrate.

The chips are obtained by high voltage fragmentation and controlled in sizing and weight distribution.

  • Novel design methods by implementing reprocessed CFs/GFs as core substrate for lightweight sidewall panels in aircraft cabin.
  • Set of methods for reprocessing CF/GF layers from EoL composite interiors panels to achieve design for circularity.
  • High voltage fragmentation technique for composite layers grinding and sorting.
  • Establishing a higher mechanical performance without increasing the overall weight.
Challenges
  • Reprocessing and remanufacturing are not possible on current lining design.
  • Due to thermosetting resin the dismantling and recycling is not possible without compromising the mechanical behavior.
Solution
  • Optimized layout of sandwich architecture by including reprocessed CF/GF in the core.
