HEAD used rGFs as replacement for virgin GFs to produce a rGF-based fleece to be further impregnated and incorporated in the structural architecture of amateur skis.

The demonstrator has been tested according to the relevant standards and sporting conditions with the target KPIs: processability of fleece on prepreg line, resin uptake >100%, delamination test > 0.8 N/mm.

Performance was slightly different, yet this can be adjusted by the overall construction.

  • A ski is a complex composite part, combining wood, glass fibes, metal, rubber, thermoplastic materials.
  • The lifetime of a ski is often limited by the steel edge, the racing base or the top sheet. The glass fibers can withstand much longer use periods.
  • Additional, in the production a significant amount of glass fiber waste is produced, which can be used for recycling.
  • A non structural non woven from rGf in combination with virgin material has been achieved, which can be used in ski construction.
Challenges
  • Production of non woven material in the right technology and specification.
  • Processability and constant product.
Solution
  • A lightly oriented non woven was finally achieved with passed the KPIs.
